What HVAC Noises Are Bad Noises?

Burnham K2If you hear any unusual noise coming from your HVAC unit, please turn it off and call us. Don’t attempt any kind of repair without consulting an HVAC certified technician first.

A few noises that you might here that are indicative of a more serious problem are:

Squeeling/Screeching
This can indicate that you need a new motor bearing or have a bad belt. Belts are a relatively cheep fix and often your motor just needs lubricating. This can be done at home or by a professional. Call our office for more information.

Rattling/Thumping/Banging/Clanking from the Inside
Usually this means a problem with the blower or the motor. This can indicate that a part inside your furnace or air conditioner has come loose. If the noise is louder than a rattling and more like a banging noise, you probably have a part that has broken or disconnected completely. At this point turn your unit off and call our office.

Scraping
If you hear a scraping noise, turn your unit off. This can indicate a dangerous situation. This sound usually means that something has broken completely and is moving around the inside of your unit.

Humming
If your unit is working the way it should, than this is probably just the transformer running loudly. If your unit isn’t working right that is might be the motor fan or capacitor.
